Charleston County Councilman Paul Thurmond uncharacteristically pleaded with his fellow council members to approve road works at the junction of Folly and Camp Roads.
Thurmond said that there had been a number of road projects considered in his area and all had been controversial.
This project, though, had the support of all – the city of Charleston, the town of James Island and residents. He urged approval, even though the expected cost would be more than $15 million, compared to an estimate of $6 million 10 years ago.
Thurmond said that two other projects – Folly/Maybank and Route17/41 – in his area had come in under budget and asked if the savings be applied to this project. He noted that the intersection was a major bottleneck to traffic on Folly Road.
The council’s finance committee agreed.
