Newberry County Council has approved the sale of one of the state’s few remaining county-owned nursing homes.
After numerous meetings, discussions and contract revisions, the council has agreed to sell the J. F. Hawkins and Springfield Place site to Prestige Healthcare.
The agreement, approved at the Nov. 3 County Council meeting, calls for Prestige to receive economic development incentives that allow the company to forego paying taxes on the facility for the first three years.
Prestige would then pay reduced taxes of $157,000 for years four through 10, according to the Newberry Observer.
Details of the sale, which will be completed in mid-December or early January, will not be released until both parties have signed the contract. As part of the agreement, Prestige will make needed improvements to both facilities, the Observer reported.
It is believed that Prestige’s parent company, Madison Healthcare, is paying a little more than $11 million for J. F. Hawkins and Springfield Place.
Newberry is one of the few counties in South Carolina to own a nursing home. Of the nearly 200 residential care facilities in the state, just four others are owned by counties.
