Where Government Gets Exposed

Push to Change Local Referendum Process

By Jan Williams
Citizen Reporter

Lexington County resident Jim Gordon, representing a coalition of citizen groups from across the state, makes a presentation at the Greenville County Legislative Delegation meeting Jan. 3 urging passage of the local initiative referendum.

South Carolina law requires 15 percent of registered voters to sign a petition to get an item on the ballot; the local initiative referendum would reduce that figure to 5 percent of individuals who voted in the last gubernatorial election. Gordon’s recommendation would apply to local ballot initiatives.
