Where Government Gets Exposed

Citizen: SC Should Reform Initiative Process

By Jan Williams
Citizen Reporter

Lexington County resident Jim Gordon tells the Greenville County Legislative Delegation during a Jan. 3 meeting that passage of the local initiative referendum would bring the region into line with many other parts of the country as far as referendum requirements are concerned.

Gordon says that South Carolina law requires 15 percent of registered voters to sign a petition to get an item on the ballot; the local initiative referendum would reduce that figure to 5 percent of individuals who voted in the last gubernatorial election. Gordon’s recommendation would apply to local ballot initiatives.
