Where Government Gets Exposed

Happy Thanksgiving, from The Nerve

SC Government Thanksgiving

Politeness is for family, not politicians

To our readers: As you enjoy the company of family and friends on the greatest of America’s holidays, take a second to ask yourself a question. If the turkey is dry and the stuffing is hard and the turnip greens are rancid, would anyone notice? Would anyone care?

Of course, you would all care.

And the same should apply to what our state lawmakers propose to pass into law in the name of “reform.” A weak and convoluted ethics bill, a “restructuring” bill that gives a hegemonic legislature even more power, a change in the state’s Freedom of Information law that gives more power to politicians and bureaucrats – these things shouldn’t be called reform.

Our hope is that, when lawmakers return to Columbia in 2016, citizens judge their efforts at least as severely as they judge Aunt Mabel’s sweet potato casserole and Uncle Dave’s cornbread. Lawmakers actually deserve it. Trust us on this.

But seriously, Happy Thanksgiving, from all of us at The Nerve.
