Over the past five years, Oconee County Council has been criticized for concentrating a good bit of its efforts on zoning, to the exclusion of much else going on in the county, some feel.
Some also believe that the effort is centered on lake zoning, with many lake property owners seemingly more concerned about their properties around the county’s lakes than other residents.
As a result, there’s been an outcry among county residents.
When you drive down a road that goes to a lake community, you often see pickup trucks and other things in the yard, and the people with lake property don’t like that. But instead of being neighborly and finding a friendly way to clean things up, the county has passed ordinances about how yards should look.
The moves have been against the will of many county residents.
There was one County Council meeting where person after person said, “Don’t do this,” and County Council went ahead and did it anyway.
It’s unfortunate because if the whole community thrives you thrive. One has to wonder why these folks feel they have to put the screws to somebody in order to make sure they get their piece of the pie.
