Curt Olson

Curt Olson joined the South Carolina Policy Council in January 2013 as an investigative reporter with 20 years of experience as a journalist. He most recently worked at Texas Watchdog, focusing on waste, fraud and abuse, and open government issues. He also served as investigative reporter for Texas Budget Source at the Texas Public Policy Foundation in Austin, TX. He covered the Texas Legislature’s 2011 session, covering the state budget, pensions, open government issues, and state budget transparency. He reported on excessive higher and public education spending, large salary hikes for some administrators in Katy, TX, and he exposed violations of the Texas Open Meetings Act by a water board in Ellis County, TX. Curt spent nearly 14 years of his journalism career at The News-Herald in Willoughby, Ohio, where he climbed the ranks of staff writer and copy editor to serve as Editorial Page Editor for more than four years. He wrote editorials and analyses on various matters related to government. He covered public and higher education and local governments, including a state lawsuit over school funding. Curt started his career in 1991 at his hometown newspaper, The Post-Journal in Jamestown, N.Y., where he covered county and local governments. Curt has won several reporting and writing awards at the state level. He is a graduate of Liberty University where he studied journalism and had a minor in political science.
